Rookie Ladder: Pre-Major IV

Heading into the final Major of the 2022 season, we’ve narrowed both ladders down to just five players.

The Seattle duo are still clear front runners for the top two rookie spots on our ladder — both players are the only two rookies in this class to hoist a trophy at a Major tournament this season, with Pred also having a Major MVP award under his name.

Nero, Gismo, and Nastie had almost perfect splits with their respective teams, both Breach and Ravens finished 4-1 and will begin in the winner’s bracket at this weekend’s Major IV hosted by Subliners, but, unless either of the three come out victorious in New York, or at Championship Weekend in August, it’s unlikely Pred and Sib will drop below the top two positions in the ladder.

The leftover active rookies that didn’t quite make the top five include Paris Legion’s rookie trio GRVTY, Jimbo, and Johnny, who only have two wins this year between the three, and Mutineer’s 2ReaL who is struggling, averaging a 0.74 kill/death ratio over the five matches he’s played.

Capsidal, Davpadie, Prolute, and Harry have all had mostly respectable seasons as rookie players but were unfortunately benched and sent to the Challengers circuit over the last month, and likely won’t see a starting role for the remainder of the season unless a last-minute roster change happens between now and August.

Below are the top five rankings for the rookie ladder, voted by Breaking Point staff.

  • Average vote: 1.2
  • Last ladder: First
  • Team record: 15-14 (fourth)
  • Tournament results: Ninth-12th, fifth-sixth, and first.
  • Overall kill/death ratio: 1.08

Pred held a 1.20 kill/death ratio during the Major IV qualifiers, which was only second to Cellium, he was also one of only three SMG players in the top 10 kill/death ratios over the last three weeks.

In both Hardpoint and Control, the Australian rookie ranks first in kills per 10 minutes throughout the entire season, he’s also ranked top 10 in damage per minute in both respawn modes, and ninth in Search and Destroy kills per round.

Despite an incredible showing from Pred over the last split, Surge still struggled and finished 1-4 during this stage, with their only win coming against Legion.

Sib ranks top 10 in all six respawn categories, which includes first in damage per 10 mins in both modes. However, on the other side, he’s ranked near the bottom in both Search and Destroy kill/death ratio and kills per round.

Seattle Surge fell to the elimination bracket after a poor performance during the qualifiers. Their Major IV weekend will start on Friday when play the loser of Mutineers vs. Breach.

Gismo missed nine matches over the season and has played nine fewer matches than both Nero and Nastie, but his return this split has rejuvenated his team, and they’re back to the form we saw at the beginning of the season.

As mentioned earlier in the season, Gismo is still yet to prove himself in a LAN environment, he’s struggled at both Major’s he attended so far, averaging a 0.86 kill/death ratio on LAN, and a 1.10 kill/death ratio in online matches.

Ravens finished Major IV qualifiers 4-1, only losing to Guerrillas in a series that lasted four hours due to server-related issues.

  • Last ladder: Fifth
  • Team record: 15-14 (fifth)
  • Tournament results: Fifth-sixth, third, and ninth-12th
  • Overall kill/death ratio: 0.94

Nero had some of the most memorable moments of his professional career this split, in Boston’s first match of the qualifiers he finished with a game-high 113 kills — 23 more than any of his teammates, which included 49 kills on Bocage Hardpoint alone.

Boston added one of the most fast-paced players in the league to their starting line-up during this split, which straight away looked to help Nero with his efficiency, but his consistency is still something he needs to work on.

Breach finished 4-1 over their last five matches and will start at Major IV in the winner’s bracket on Thursday against Mutineers.

Nastie has had his moments this season but is still yet to prove himself as a top-three rookie. Looking at his basic statistics there isn’t much to see, he ranks in the bottom half of the league in almost every statistic below, with the exception of a slightly higher first blood percentage in Search and Destroy than most.

However, Nastie and his team have looked great as of late, and are heading into Major IV as the number one seeded team. They’ll face their European rivals on Ultra to kick off the weekend at 1:30 pm ET.
