PaulEhx to the London Royal Ravens

The London Royal Ravens have signed Paul “PaulEhx” Avila, the team announced on Tuesday. Earlier in the season, CDL Intel reported that PaulEhx was offered a 14-day contract by the Ravens, but opted instead to remain with WestR, his Challengers team. PaulEhx and London agreed to a standard CDL contract, sources tell Breaking Point. He joins the team as veteran Parasite departs, and will complete the starting roster of Seany, Dylan, and Zed at London.

Why Now?

The timing of the move makes sense from both sides. Challengers is notoriously unstable, and the once dominant WestR team has undergone a series of roster changes over the past few weeks. London has started the season 0 – 6 and finished in last place at the Stage 1 Major.

Ehx Factor

PaulEhx has been a breakout player this season, establishing himself as one of the most consistent slayers at the top of the Call of Duty Challengers (CDC). With a 1.46 K/D in Control, he was the #1 ranked North American Control player, through Stage 1 of the Challengers Elite series.

Paul started his career in online WWII SnD tournaments, and quickly progressed to variant gameplay in Black Ops 4 as his flashy gameplay caught the attention of future stars iLLeY, Cellium, and Simp.

This year, as part of the dominant WestR team, PaulEhx was able to routinely showcase his talent. His versatility and ability to use both an AR and an SMG is attractive for London, which has been plagued with personnel issues and international travel restrictions related to COVID-19. Ravens players Afro, Alexx, Zer0 are currently in the United Kingdom, and unavailable to join the starting lineup on short notice.

Paul is also known for his clutch ability, which will be a key factor for London – 3 of London’s 6 losses resulted from a map 5 situation. A significant factor to WestR’s early success was their ability to close maps, and it often came off the back of Paul’s heroic clutches.

The clip above highlights Paul’s playmaking ability and clutch factor. With a last-minute contest and a crucial 3-piece to clear the hill, PaulEhx turns the tide in Map 3. Casting by @IHOLDSHIFT.

“No Twins, No Wins”: Breaking the Curse

PaulEhx joins London as the only North American player currently on the roster. As a team, London currently averages a 0.83 K/D ratio in SnD and is 1 – 8 in SnD maps (11% win rate), ranking dead last in both categories among all CDL teams. SnD is one of Paul’s strengths, and his addition is expected to bolster the team’s anemic Search game.

Will Paul be able to fully integrate into the all British team? For the move to be effective, the Ravens will need to be patient with Paul and allow the rookie to find his rhythm.

Paul has established a high level of performance on this game, and his presence may be the X-Factor required for the London Royal Ravens to shake the curse and turn around the season.
