Challenger Cup #3 Preview: North America

The third Challengers’ Cup is quickly approaching, with the open tournament scheduled to start this Saturday. It is an important tournament for seeding for future tournaments and qualifiers. During the first two tournaments in December, we were able to see the teams that looked to be ahead of the pack and which players were off to a hot start in the Cold War season. With a three week break for the holidays, we’ll give a breakdown of how the top 8 seeds did in the first two Challenger Cups and a preview for this weekend.

If you would like to see the results, bracket, and rosters of the first three Cups, CoDGamepedia is a great tool to use:

#1 WestR

  • GRVTY (4,130 pts)
  • PaulEhx (4,025 pts)
  • Venxm (4,025 pts)
  • Zap (4,020 pts)

The entire WestR lineup has performed very well during the duration of the first two Challengers’ Cups. The team walked through the top 8 brackets in both weekends with little resistance to take home both victories. All four players have looked phenomenal, with the lowest overall KD being a 1.18 from Zap. The only negative KD in any mode on the team was Zap’s 0.79 in Search & Destroy. The strongest mode for the squad is Hardpoint, where the team has a 1.33 team KD and have looked very clean so far and ahead of the pack so far.

  • Stamino (2,615 pts)
  • Zinx (2,530 pts)

6,045 points behind 1st seed

*Mayhem was a part of Revenge Tour during Cups 1 & 2

*Pentagram was on the HYXR roster during Cups 1 & 2

The second-seeded HYXR has been very consistent in the first two cups but the team is coming off a roster change during the break. The team was shorthanded after Pentagrxm left to join the Built by Gamers roster. To fill his spot on the roster, HYXR recruited Mayhem from Revenge Tour. The squad has two solid placements under their belt (3rd, 2nd), but have a combined 1-9 map count versus the top seed WestR. These losses make their individual statistics look worse than they actually are, as the HYXR team has great teamwork and are solid in each of the three modes. Look for them to improve going into Cup #3 and be more prepared to take on WestR.

Placements

Cup #1 – 3rd Place

– Win vs Triumph 3-2

– Win vs Revenge Tour 3-0

#3 Wamby Bamby

  • LlamaGod (1715 pts)
  • Parzelion (1715 pts)
  • Perform (1715 pts)
  • Ramby (1715 pts)

9,340 points behind 1st seed

One of the teams that rose the highest after the second Challengers’ Cup, the team rose to the 3rd seed with a 4th place finish in the 2nd cup and the dismantling of the Revenge Tour roster (were the previous 3rd seed). The squad took down both Triumph & Revenge Tour on their way to the 4th place finish. They were powered by great individual performances in the different modes, whether it’s LlamaGod’s 1.59 KD in SnD or Perform’s 1.38 KD in Control. They are a scrappy team that can take maps off of the better teams in the tournament and make surprising runs.

Cup #2 – 4th Place

– Loss vs WestR 1-3

– Win vs Triumph 3-2

– Win vs Revenge Tour 3-2

  • Drazah (1300 pts)
  • GloFrosty (2400 pts)
  • Parasite (1330 pts)

9,570 points behind 1st seed

*GloFrosty was a part of Revenge Tour during Cups 1 & 2

*Parasite played with “Kringe6” in Cup 2

*Drazah played with “Big Dawgs” in Cup 1

Westeros in an interesting roster full of veterans in the scene. The squad has undergone many roster changes though, as they have seen 6 different players on the roster and have had 3 changes within the first month of the season. With Blazt & Neptune being forced off the roster, the team welcomed back Parasite and recruited GloFrosty from Revenge Tour. While their results have varied, they have a lot of firepower and should be able to improve on past results.

#5 Built by gamers

  • GodRx (1,360 pts)
  • KiSMET (1,360 pts)
  • Pandur (1,360 pts)
  • Pentagrxm (2,535 pts)

9,585 points behind 1st seed

*Pentagrxm was a part of HYXR during Cups 1 & 2

The original Built By Gamers roster struggled in the first two cups, finishing top 16 in both and failing to make it to the double-elimination bracket. The solution? Dropping Maux for Pentagrxm to add some much need speed & SMG firepower to the ranks. This roster is packed with talent and past professional players so it is only a matter of time before we see this roster make a deep run in a Cup.

Cup #2 – Top 16

#6 uT CREW

  • Jimbo (1,615 pts)
  • Phantomz (1,615 pts)
  • Sib (1,615 pts)
  • Wrecks (1,615 pts)

9,740 points behind 1st seed

The 6th seed in NA is none other than uT Crew. The squad consists of ex-Atlanta FaZe academy players Jimbo & Sib, ex-Paris Legion substitute Phantomz, and ex-UYU flex Wrecks. The team is packed to the brim with talent and showed lots of improvement in the second Challenger Cup. While they started slow and finished top 32 in the first Cup, the team leapt to a 3rd place finish in the second. They had clean wins versus Westeros, Yessir, & Wamby Bamby with a 9-1 map record. Their kryptonite was HYXR, who beat them 1-3 and 2-3 to knock them out of the bracket. This is a deadly team to look out for this weekend.

Cup #2 – 3rd Place

#7 Naga & co

  • Felo (1,615 pts)
  • Nagafen (1,615 pts)
  • Neptune (1,440 pts)
  • Proto (1,615 pts)

9,915 points behind 1st seed

*Felo was a part of Triumph during Cups 1 & 2

*Neptune was a part of Triumph during Cups 1 & 2

The newly formed Naga & Co have brought in Felo and Neptune to reinforce the Proto/Nagafen duo. Felo & Nagafen are past teammates, taking the NA Challengers Championship in the Modern Warfare season under Triumph. This is a squad that needs to see lots of individual improvements, as all 4 players are sub-1.00 overall KD and haven’t looked very strong on Sundays. But with the leadership and veteran presence that the trio of ex-pros have, they should make a lot of improvements and guide Neptune. If they can improve in respawns they will be able to contest on Sunday.

  • Prolute (1,215 pts)
  • Saints (1,260 pts)
  • Spart (2,315 pts)

*Brand new team

The 8th seed in North America is the newly formed NYSL Academy. The Subliners have announced that they picked up Diamondcon for their academy team, but haven’t announced who the final three roster spots would go to. This four stack has been practicing over the past week and looks to be the roster going into the weekend. While Diamondcon & Prolute have yet to make it to Sunday, Spart and Saints have each made it to the double-elimination bracket. Spart has seen the most success, finishing 2nd & Top 6 with the Revenge Tour squad. Saints finished top 6 during the first Cup with LvG Imagine and had a very solid 1.18 KD in SnD. If the squad had enough time to gel they would be a dark horse in the third Cup.
